Sonia Rykiel

Sonia Rykiel, born in Paris 1930 came from a non fashion educated background.  Her rise to fame started during pregnancy, searching for clothes that she liked. Unable to find garments to match her taste, Sonia Rykiel decided to create her own. Rykiel opened her first boutique in Paris, rue de Grenelle, it was huge success and was later that year elected "Queen of Knits" by the American publication Women's Wear Daily. Her diverse knit and sweater range became her signature style with innovative design such as the inverted seam, the no hem and no lining. Sonia Rykiel created a unique style that would soon be recognised throughout the world with distinctive features compromising of bold stripes, eye catching sequins, lettering and the colour black.
